chapter history
Seven courageous women motivated by the urge and desire for cultural affairs, political action programs and promoting higher education, chartered a new course of action for Broward County. They combined their talents and ingenuity to organize the county’s first African-American Greek-letter organization. The seven women were: Marjorie A. Davis (deceased), Dr. Josephine Ivey (deceased), Marguerite Miller (deceased), Juanita C. Phillips (deceased), Frances Scruggs (deceased), Robena Sturgis (deceased), and Ellyn F. Walters (deceased). The chartering ceremony was held at the home of Mrs. Walters in February of 1950. Accepting the challenge, the Sorors (sisters) began to network with influential residents to solicit their help in promoting the sorority’s agenda. The chapter’s conception and vision of a special cultural event, involving young women, led to the birth of the first Debutante Cotillion for African-Americans in 1954. With no access to hotels and ballrooms, meetings were held on the lawn of the beautiful Sweeting Estate. The first Debutante Cotillion was held in the cafeteria of Dillard High School. “An Evening Royal Elegance” has evolved into the most outstanding social event of the year in Broward County.
Recognizing the need to expand and enhance the role of the African-American male in our society, a new dimension was added to the Debutante Cotillion in 2002. “The Masters’ Ball” has placed emphasis on mentorship and scholarship for young men. The chapter continues the legacy of our five founders.
In 2004, the 50th Cotillion and Masters’ Ball made its debut under the Zeta D.O.V.E. Foundation, a 501C3 non-profit organization. The Foundation was created for the purpose of securing grants and corporate sponsorships to extend the educational opportunities of our youth. The D.O.V.E. Foundation includes all activities of the youth and scholarship programs. The Foundation is an important arm of the Delta Eta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
